Have you ever seen those dances on Youtube and wonder what they’re like? How is this created? What goes into the dance? Who’s responsible for making this all possible? Let’s give you some background … This was my son’s wedding, May 20, 2017. Congratulations again to Tony & Claire!

First, the client (bride/groom) must want to do something unique for their wedding. After all, it’s their wedding day, right?! In this case, my son wanted to surprise his new wife (Claire) with a groomsmen dance. He had some songs in mind and wanted to choreograph a dance with his groomsmen.

As a DJ, I mixed these songs together in the order he dictated, creating the transitions that he would use for this dance. Once put together, he practiced with his groomsmen. They practiced a lot. We hired another DJ, Paul Chamberlin from The Music Machine in South Bend. Paul is not only my friend, but a fellow trusted business owner. The mix was given to him, and the rest was in the hands of the groomsmen. Well, the “Dad’s” got involved a little too!

This dance was done after the formalities. My son and his groomsmen energized the 170+ guests, right from the beginning. The dance floor was packed all night long, filled with an amazing vibe. Indiana Bridal Spectacular

January 10, 2016 … Brides and couples lined up at the Indiana Bridal Spectacular.  The event was held at the Century Center in South Bend Indiana.  Over 100 local businesses assembled to showcase their products and services to newly engaged couples.

One couple found at the show was a father/daughter team.  Yes, that’s my daughter and I, in our booth and having some fun with a fish eye camera too.  We greeted everyone as they came through the door, talking for nearly 5 hours straight.

While many couples were gathering information about the local vendors, some were ready for the next step of booking their DJ.  Many brides hadn’t even found a venue to host their reception.  This is the FIRST thing to do … Find the Venue!  Once a venue has been chosen, then proceed to the Photographer, Videographer and Entertainment (DJ).

Bridal Spectacular 2015

The Bridal Spectacular is the longest running Bridal Show in the South Bend Indiana area.  Featured at the show, were over 100 vendors that displayed their products and services to newly engaged couples.  From wedding dresses and tuxedos, to cupcakes, photo booths, DJ’s and photographers, there was something for everyone.

Two fashion shows engaged brides on the newest trends and fashions.  The stage was surrounded by chairs and onlookers.  Uplighting by Purrfect Occassions Entertainment, created the focus in the room and helped the backdrop of the models and their attire.  Westley Leon Studios of Niles Michigan, captured this photo of the models posing on stage.

Next years’ lineup will be further enhanced by additional lighting features, new dresses, and exciting music.  Congratulations to everyone on their upcoming wedding day.

Brides Night Out will be hosted by Knollwood Country Club in Granger Indiana.  This is a FREE event for engaged brides in the South Bend Indiana area.  The Michiana Wedding Network will be there with many of the network members.  Engaged brides can visit with photographers, DJs, Florists, Cake Decorators and more!

Knollwood Country Club is on a luscious golf course setting, with views that make the brides special day even more memorable.  This facility can host not only the wedding reception, but the ceremony, rehearsal dinners, and bridal showers.  There are indoor and outdoor settings for the ceremony, including a waterfall/garden area.  Couples can choose from the amenities the golf course has to offer, including a round of golf for the groomsmen.

The Michiana Wedding Network www.michianaweddingnetwork.com is the place to go for reservations.  The night out is free to anyone that registers.  The date is Thursday, April 24, 2014 from 7-9pm.  Reservations are required.  RSVP by 4-20-14.  Again, this is open to all brides and their guests.

Mark McDonnell remembers first approaching South Bend Country Club board members about a catering idea about nine years ago. At that time, the 97-year-old private west-side club still handled its food and beverage operation in-house. It was common practice among member-only clubs. But this month, that common practice changed. And McDonnell is eager to explain about how it expands his catering business. “Grill at the Greens” is the new member restaurant at South Bend Country Club that is operated by McDonnell and the LaSalle Grill. They are also now managing the poolside cafe, bar and catering all special events.

“As a private club — like many others these days — we struggled with issues like staffing, inventory levels and consistency in service,” Bob Wozny, president of the South Bend Country Club board, explains via e-mail.

The club had nearly closed in 2010, before it averted a sheriff’s sale and a listed judgment of $1.79 million. But new owners saved the club in 2011 with financial and emotional investments and set out to bring back the excitement and pride that had been missing for some time. Their goals included: making widespread improvements to the course and clubhouse, making the club more family-friendly, and improving customer service to build value in membership and attract new members.

“The flexibility in management and (McDonnell’s) reputation for and service made the decision quite simple,” Wozny says about bringing in an outside food and beverage operator. Because of the change, South Bend Country Club is offering a new “dining only” membership option that provides full access to Grill at the Greens and all other club dining events. McDonnell is planning monthly wine dinners and other food-related events. He also has started booking weddings, meetings, showers and birthday parties that will be catered by Grill at the Greens.

The dining-only membership costs $125 per year, says McDonnell, who hopes to reach 100 members in about a year. McDonnell will move staff between the club, downtown restaurant and another catering business called Events with Style. And his team will better manage the inventory that is critical in providing fresh quality dining choices to members, Wozny says.

Several promotions have been made within Food Ventures Inc., which owns LaSalle Grill, Grill at the Greens and the catering businesses, McDonnell says, to maintain consistency across businesses. Laurel McDonnell is now director of food and beverage at Grill at the Greens. Rob Davidson has been promoted to sous chef and Everardo Garibay is sous chef at Grill at the Greens. Tom Sheridan also has been named executive chef for all food service operations at LaSalle Grill and its other business ventures.

Owners, Becky & Corey Cressy have opened Michiana’s newest banquet facility in South Bend Indiana.  Called “The Brick”, it’s history, design, and location, make it one of a kind in our area.

Ten years ago, Becky & Corey were getting married.  They were in search of a venue that had rustic charm.  They even considered asking a farmer if they could use a barn for their reception.  They wanted what every bride and groom wants for their wedding day … to be unique and have their wedding be memorable for themselves and their guests.

The Brick is the former Eckrich plant, located at 1145 Northside Blvd in South Bend Indiana, between the YMCA and Farmer’s Market.  The brick interior and exterior, make it a dream for the do it yourself bride, who wants to infuse her character in her wedding day.  Photographer’s will enjoy the surroundings, including the St. Joseph river, across the street.

Included is a prep kitchen, allowing you to use a caterer of your choice.  There’s a beautiful bar area, utilizing reclaimed lumber from the Oliver Plow building, and a bar that is absolutely amazing.  An outdoor patio will be installed, as soon as the weather breaks.  Inside, an upper stand area can be utilized for a band or Disc Jockey.  Simple light fixtures look like fireflies at night.

10 Dirty Secrets You Should Know About The Wedding / Event DJ Before You Hire Them!!!

1. Beware of the DJ Company who tries to beat everyone’s price or offers you a dirt cheap price. Why? In the industry he is referred to as a bottom feeder. He can not book weddings based on his performance so therefore he has to offer you the cheapest price in order to lure you in. Usually, you will get sub- standard services. Remember the old cliché; you get what you pay for. Why trust your wedding or event to someone who is a bottom feeder?

2. Watch out for hidden fees. Ask about fees for lighting, wireless microphones, extra music, planning sessions etc. You may be lured in by a low price and then of course you want all those extras. Next thing you know, you are paying a lot more than you initially thought. Even more importantly, a lot of companies charge travel fees or even charge you for the time period where the DJ is setting up. Be sure that everything is clear before you sign anything.

3. Beware of hiring a friend of the family or a DJ who does not give you a contract. Quite often they do not reserve your date or something else comes up and you are left searching for a DJ or Sound System a week before your wedding. Not to mention, you probably won’t get the professionalism and experience your night deserves. As you may trust your friend/family, you do not want to take any chances on your special day.

4. Does your DJ just talk about his equipment? What is this equipment going to do for you in terms of making your reception or event, a dream come true? Most people will not notice the clarity of the speakers so if he tells you that his equipment is better because he has “X speakers”, more than likely you would not notice the difference from another type of professional speakers. The main thing is that most professional DJ equipment is great and it really depends on the DJ to get your event going.

5. Avoid the DJ that talks about himself too much and has poor hygiene. Why? If he talks about himself too much then he will try to be the main focus at your reception. The main focus at a reception should be the Bride and Groom or Guest(s) of Honor. Most unprofessional DJ’s do not even own suits, let alone a Tuxedo. Can you imagine a gorgeous reception that you have invested thousands of dollars and it is ruined by an unprofessional, poorly dressed MC and DJ. If he does not care about his appearance then more than likely, he will not care about the quality of your reception or can come unprepared. Sloppy!

6. Can you imagine a Master of Ceremonies that does not have a good command of the English Language? You have sophisticated guests and your DJ is using slang or continues to be embarrassing or inappropriate on the microphone. Not only will that affect you, but the DJ and entertainment is what sets the mood of the night. Do you want your wedding to be remembered as the one with the embarrassing DJ? You have the right to be picky about whom you choose as your DJ.

7. A DJs who say they use iPods or iTunes to DJ your wedding reception may not be the smartest choice. As nice as an iPod may be, it’s not meant for professional use. Did you know consumer reports, reported that 3 out of every 4 iPods will randomly lock up or freeze! This would be horrible especially during the first dance!

8. What about the Disc Jockey that stands behind the DJ booth and acts bored. He does nothing to get the guests motivated. He could be playing the best music but unless he reflects motivation and action, it will affect your guests. You want to choose a DJ with personality and energy, that will make all the guests enjoy and remember your wedding.

9. Most Bottom Feeders are not licensed nor are they insured. Most banquet facilities require the DJ Company to have liability insurance. You may hire him and then find out weeks before your reception that he does not have liability insurance and then you are not allowed to use him. This leaves you searching for a DJ within days of your reception.

10. Here is the most important item: Does your facility require you to use the house DJ. With a House DJ most often you do not know who you will be doing your wedding or will he play what you like. You may not know what DJ you will get from that company until a few days before your wedding. It would be in your best interest if the banquet hall would let YOU decide who will be in charge of creating your Dream Day! You should be able to make your own choices and choose quality entertainment. Some companies install speakers in a banquet facility so the hall will only refer one sound company. Ask to see those DJs in person and hear the quality of that sound system before you book!

Master of Ceremonies Certification

 

In August of 2012, Anthony Jones, Owner of Purrfect Occassions DJ Service, attended a DJ workshop with Mark and Rebecca Farrell.  The workshop teaches DJ’s, how to transition into a Master of Ceremonies.

Taught in this workshop, are essential speaking skills, and proper edicate. The Bronze level focuses on proper introductions, toasts, traditions and transitions.  Every wedding deserves proper honor, respect and dignity.  In the Professional Mobile Disc Jockey arena, only a handful of local DJ’s have any proper training.

Master of Ceremonies is the person who works with the other vendors at a reception, to ensure the goals of the client have been met.  Typically, this is the person who is in charge over everyone!
